Campus Fashion, Fads and Faux Pas

Archive for the month “March, 2012”

The sun comes out at LU and so do the shorts!

The weather is heating up in Nashville, which means it is time to ditch the jeans and sweatpants and bring out the shorts! Here on the Lipscomb University Campus, many styles of shorts are worn, and they always seem to match the personality of whoever is wearing them.

First, I will start off with a fad that has been around for years and years: jean shorts, also known as “jorts.”  These shorts come in many styles for both girls and guys. However, in my opinion, “jorts” are a major fashion faux pas on guys. Some may disagree, but I think females should be the only ones allowed to wear them. The “cut-off” style is coming back, giving off a more retro and vintage

look. Yet, the clean-cut jean shorts are classy and great as well. Many girls around the LU campus pair their “jorts” with a cute top and sandals, but they can also be dressed down with a T-shirt or sweatshirt. Nevertheless, jean shorts are timeless and a necessary piece to every girl’s wardrobe. Now guys, I need some convincing to be able to say the same to you!

"Jorts" on men are NOT flattering

The second and last type of shorts I will discuss is athletic shorts. In my opinion, these are the most popular shorts worn on campus by both genders. For guys, the typical basketball shorts are the most common. For girls on the other hand, running shorts are seen the most. Now guys, you don’t have to be a basketball star to sport the look; anyone can pull them off! I see guys with all different styles sporting these shorts in all colors and brands. When it comes to the female running shorts, you can be as creative as you want! While the overall style is usually the same, these athletic shorts come in all different colors, and even patterns. Nike is the most popular, but brands such as Under Armour and Adidas make them as well. Many may think that the thirty dollar price range is too expensive for these shorts, but I will be the first to tell you that they are worth the price. They can be worn to work out in, to go run errands and to class as well. They are very comfortable and give athletic shorts a great name.

How did running shorts get their name? They are modeled after shorts that are worn, well, to run. They are lightweight, breezy and aerodynamic.

What are your favorite type of shorts?

Converse are the topic of conversation at LU

Converse shoes have been around for more than 100 years and are just as popular today as they were in the past. At Lipscomb University, you will see students wearing Converse tennis shoes during every season and sporting all colors. This shoe company was founded in 1908 by Marquis Mills Converse, but it was not until 1915 that the company began to produce shoes for athletics. Converse’s claim to fame came two years later when the All-Star basketball shoe was introduced. For years, Converse were the most popular athletic shoe, but when the 70’s came around it lost many customers to Nike, Adidas and Puma. Converse found itself no longer the official shoe of the NBA, and its success quickly began to decline.

In 2001, Converse filed bankruptcy but was saved by a new team of businessmen who drove Converse from the 16th largest shoe company to No. 7 in less than two years. This, however, lead to a buyout from Nike which Converse spread worldwide. Converse shoes come in all colors and styles nowadays, but at first the only model was the black high-tops with white laces. In 1966, it began to manufacture others colors due to pressure from basketball teams. Thankfully, today the shoes come in a wide range of colors to fit anyone’s personality and style. It is amazing to me how Converse shoes have been around for so long, but have yet to go out of style. They are inexpensive, priced at anywhere from $30-50, and they last for years.

I own only one pair, which are black and low-tops, but I have had them since high school and absolutely love them. They are

durable, comfortable and lightweight, which is great for walking around campus. Students here at Lipscomb, girls and guys alike, sport these signature shoes all year long. I see a lot of girls wearing them with yoga pants, leggings and jeans or jean shorts. Guys, on the other hand, usually wear them with any type of shorts, jeans or even sweat pants. The great thing about Converse is that they are not as “bulky” looking as normal tennis shoes, so they look better with slightly nicer clothes but are still comfortable. Although today people do not wear these shoes to play sports, they are still very popular and I have a feeling they will always be in style. Do you think they look outdated or still in style? Vote and give your opinion!

Colored jeans are making a scene!

This year there is a fad traveling around the world, and more locally, here at Lipscomb: colored jeans. Now, when you first hear about this trend you may be skeptical just as I was, but if you give these vibrant pants a shot, you will see that they are a great snag for your closet! I saw these pants first in a fashion magazine a couple years ago and wondered if customers would ever become brave enough to flaunt them, but surely enough soon after I began to see girls and guys alike wearing colored denim. Here on the LU campus, I notice these jeans more on girls. Popular colors for the colder seasons are dark green, bright blue, red and black. However, as the weather has gotten warmer I have noticed more pastel colors and also white. Colored jeans are great because they can be worn with anything in your closet. If you want to go casual, throw on a pair with a T-shirt or sweater and a pair of sandals, boots or Converse. If you are wanting to dress a pair of these fun pants up for a night out, try pairing them with a nice top and heels and maybe add a blazer if the weather calls for one. Personally, I own only one pair of colored jeans and they are red, but I definitely will be keeping my eye out for some new ones to wear this spring. When I purchased them several months ago, I was wondering if I would ever actually wear them since they were such a strong fashion statement. Needless to say, they may very well be my favorite pants now!

Me and my own pair of colored jeans. They were on sale at Urban Outfitters for only $30.

They add flair and personality to any outfit and are just as comfortable as any pair of jeans you already own. Like I said, I have not seen many guys wearing colored jeans around campus so far, but I think they can work just as well  for them. If you are a guy and not into the bright colors, maybe try a darker color for less of a statement if you still want to add some excitement to your wardrobe. Colored denim jeans can be bought for a low price at stores such as Forever 21, Target and Urban Oufitters. I love this fashion trend and encourage everyone to try it! Lastly, a tip for new owners: Do not wash your new red jeans with the rest of your white laundry. Although my favorite color is pink, I wish my socks were still white. Oops!

What is all the chaos with Chacos?

Just recently I featured TOMS as a campus fad at Lipscomb University. This week, another shoe is becoming popular especially as the weather gets warmer: Chaco sandals. Many may consider these shoes a faux pas, but proud wearers of them will say otherwise. “Chacos are so comfortable and the style is laid-back, which I love,” says LU freshman and shoe fanatic Allison Brown. “They bring out my inner-hippie.” These shoes are great for people who are active because they are durable and supportive for your feet. Also, they are good for hiking, mission trips and outdoor activities because they are waterproof.

Tanlines from Chacos

Basically, they have the support of  tennis shoes but much more lightweight and breezy, so they are great for hot weather. Chaco sandals come in many different styles and colors. They even make boots and tennis shoes as well, and the price ranges anywhere from about $80 to $110. However, those that are not fans of these shoes usually are not shy to admit it. “I think it looks like people are about to walk across the Saharan Desert when they wear those,” says Lipscomb student Brittany Rupple. Personally, these shoes remind me of something that my dad used to wear to the water park, but there is no changing the minds of the faithful Chaco customers. In fact, there is a name for these people: “chaconians.” According to the Chaco website, a chaconian is a person who “pounds pavement, trails, and waves. They teach, reach, and reform. They’re people who trust Chacos.” The many “chaconians” here at Lipscomb wear their sandals with pride during all seasons, but when the weather gets warmer the number drastically increases. Chacos can be worn with about any outfit, as long as it is somewhat casual. In my opinion it would be a definite fashion faux pas to wear a pair of these with a cocktail dress. Many people on campus are seen wearing them with athletic shorts and T-shirts or even jeans. Whatever your style may be, Chacos are the new fad without a doubt. You don’t have to be a nature-lover or an outdoorsman in order to pull these off; Just take a look around Lipscomb University and you will see that anyone can wear them!
