Student athletes are not known for their fashion on campus

The student athletes here at Lipscomb are very talented on the court, but often times in class seem as if they never learned how to dress themselves. Now, I feel I can say this fairly because I am one myself and I know exactly how much effort is put into our appearance every day, and let me tell you, it’s not much. The funny thing is, I feel as if the guy athletes always look a little better than the girls. Maybe it’s because they don’t have to fix their hair or decide what “cute” outfit to wear to look nice, or at least fit in with the rest of the student population. I will say I have not yet to put on a pair of jeans (much less something nicer) so far this semester, and it is almost over! I am not bragging about this at all; I often times see girls on campus with perfect hair and an adorable sundress and I am always jealous! I really do wish I had the time or energy to do the same.

Lipscomb volleyball girls dressed in their usual attire.

I will see a girl on my team, or any other team for that matter, dressed nicely (or normal to most people) and always ask what they have going on that day. Usually the answer is that they have an interview or a date later that night, but sometimes the response is “I just decided to look like a girl today.” That is a good enough answer, I suppose. My teammate, Megan Stout, walked into class one day in a pair of jeans and her professor even asked her, “Megan, why aren’t you sporting your usual sweats and ponytail?”  Sweat pants and a sweatshirt in the winter is the most common outfit for us, while in the summer we are always wearing running shorts, T-shirts and often times a baseball cap.

The reason for these fashion faux pas occurring on a daily basis is rooted at our strenuous schedules. We wake up at 5:25 in the morning for weights, and of course no one is going to get ready for that. Next, we go straight to classes without time to shower. We may have a practice sometime during the middle of classes, then we go back to finish them. Finally, we top off the day with another practice and by the end of all of this, we are looking pretty rough. Of course I am not going to apologize for our sloppy style; there are some fair reasons behind it!

The team looks a little different all dressed up for a special occasion!

Do you agree that the athletes dress sloppy most of the time? Are you an athlete that disagrees or even a normal student that dresses the same way?

Converse are the topic of conversation at LU

Converse shoes have been around for more than 100 years and are just as popular today as they were in the past. At Lipscomb University, you will see students wearing Converse tennis shoes during every season and sporting all colors. This shoe company was founded in 1908 by Marquis Mills Converse, but it was not until 1915 that the company began to produce shoes for athletics. Converse’s claim to fame came two years later when the All-Star basketball shoe was introduced. For years, Converse were the most popular athletic shoe, but when the 70’s came around it lost many customers to Nike, Adidas and Puma. Converse found itself no longer the official shoe of the NBA, and its success quickly began to decline.

In 2001, Converse filed bankruptcy but was saved by a new team of businessmen who drove Converse from the 16th largest shoe company to No. 7 in less than two years. This, however, lead to a buyout from Nike which Converse spread worldwide. Converse shoes come in all colors and styles nowadays, but at first the only model was the black high-tops with white laces. In 1966, it began to manufacture others colors due to pressure from basketball teams. Thankfully, today the shoes come in a wide range of colors to fit anyone’s personality and style. It is amazing to me how Converse shoes have been around for so long, but have yet to go out of style. They are inexpensive, priced at anywhere from $30-50, and they last for years.

I own only one pair, which are black and low-tops, but I have had them since high school and absolutely love them. They are

High-tops

durable, comfortable and lightweight, which is great for walking around campus. Students here at Lipscomb, girls and guys alike, sport these signature shoes all year long. I see a lot of girls wearing them with yoga pants, leggings and jeans or jean shorts. Guys, on the other hand, usually wear them with any type of shorts, jeans or even sweat pants. The great thing about Converse is that they are not as “bulky” looking as normal tennis shoes, so they look better with slightly nicer clothes but are still comfortable. Although today people do not wear these shoes to play sports, they are still very popular and I have a feeling they will always be in style. Do you think they look outdated or still in style? Vote and give your opinion!

Colored jeans are making a scene!

This year there is a fad traveling around the world, and more locally, here at Lipscomb: colored jeans. Now, when you first hear about this trend you may be skeptical just as I was, but if you give these vibrant pants a shot, you will see that they are a great snag for your closet! I saw these pants first in a fashion magazine a couple years ago and wondered if customers would ever become brave enough to flaunt them, but surely enough soon after I began to see girls and guys alike wearing colored denim. Here on the LU campus, I notice these jeans more on girls. Popular colors for the colder seasons are dark green, bright blue, red and black. However, as the weather has gotten warmer I have noticed more pastel colors and also white. Colored jeans are great because they can be worn with anything in your closet. If you want to go casual, throw on a pair with a T-shirt or sweater and a pair of sandals, boots or Converse. If you are wanting to dress a pair of these fun pants up for a night out, try pairing them with a nice top and heels and maybe add a blazer if the weather calls for one. Personally, I own only one pair of colored jeans and they are red, but I definitely will be keeping my eye out for some new ones to wear this spring. When I purchased them several months ago, I was wondering if I would ever actually wear them since they were such a strong fashion statement. Needless to say, they may very well be my favorite pants now!

Me and my own pair of colored jeans. They were on sale at Urban Outfitters for only $30.

They add flair and personality to any outfit and are just as comfortable as any pair of jeans you already own. Like I said, I have not seen many guys wearing colored jeans around campus so far, but I think they can work just as well  for them. If you are a guy and not into the bright colors, maybe try a darker color for less of a statement if you still want to add some excitement to your wardrobe. Colored denim jeans can be bought for a low price at stores such as Forever 21, Target and Urban Oufitters. I love this fashion trend and encourage everyone to try it! Lastly, a tip for new owners: Do not wash your new red jeans with the rest of your white laundry. Although my favorite color is pink, I wish my socks were still white. Oops!
